Early childhood is, undoubtedly, the best time for children to grow and develop. So we believe that families and educators need to capitalise on the learning opportunities that present themselves during this early period. At Buggles Beckenham, we believe that any child – no matter how young – is capable of “learning”, “doing” and “achieving“ with a little encouragement and support.
Through play based learning, children identify their innate potential, interests, preferences and skills. They can express all these through various cues like body language, art, drama, music, and dance – what has been referred to as “the hundred languages of children”. For these very reasons, we have incorporated the tenets of Reggio Emilia as an integral part of our centre philosophy.
At Buggles Beckenham, we believe that our environment plays a crucial role in the child’s development. Be it indoors or outdoors, visual and auditory cues encourage children to question, understand and create. In essence, the environment at Beckenham acts as the Third Teacher and is constantly modeled and remodeled to keep children stimulated and curious. On clear and pleasant days the children are encouraged to have fun outdoors, while on very hot days or during winter, we try and bring the outdoors into our rooms. A lot of sensory experiences are planned, as well as play activities that help the children enhance their developmental skills in the five domains – physical, intellectual, emotional, social and language.
Self-help skills are also a big part of our curriculum, as we strongly believe in building children’s sense of independence, resilience, and the ability to arrive at their own decisions from a set of alternatives or choices. We also believe that it is important for all parents to act as co-educators for their child and we value and respect all parent involvement and input into their child’s progress each day.
Our educators hold qualifications from Certificate III and Diploma in Children’s Services through to BA level Early Childhood Qualifications as well as speaking many languages. Our educators are professional practitioners and observe closely, listen to children carefully and give value to their ideas and then create strategies to build on their interests.
